On the 40th anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Montenegro, the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism organized a Conference in Podgorica to remind about the results achieved by competent institutions and to plan ahead by devoting special attention to the identification and elimination of disaster “risk drivers”, in accordance with Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.
As part of these efforts, the Directorate for Emergency Situations, Department for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid initiated the process of adoption of DesInventar Sendai as the national disaster loss data collection system, and thanks to the support of the IPA DRAM Project funded by the European Union. Minister of Interior, Mevludin Nuhodzic, reminded also that at the end of 2017, Montenegro adopted its Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction and defined path for further development and strategic solutions, establishing, in cooperation with the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, a database on damage from disasters, including earthquakes.
Data on damage resulting from the most devastating earthquake in Montenegro are implemented in the national project on collection of data on damages from disasters unifying all historical data base of disasters in the country.
Conference participants reached the conclusion that there is a need to constantly improve knowledge in the field of risk reduction and emphasize the importance of synergy actions at the national level. Moreover, they also highlighted the active preparation of the community as well as the awareness of citizens about the importance and need for organized and efficient social action related to prevention and remediation of adverse effects of emergency situations.
